Feature artist named for Conservation Dinner

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                                                               DATE OF ISSUE: January 5, 2012

Acclaimed London painter named feature artist for 2012 Conservation Dinner gala auction in Exeter

The Conservation Dinner committee has announced that acclaimed London painter Martin Zimmer will be the feature artist at the 23rd annual charitable dinner and auction taking place April 19th, 2012 in Exeter.

“We are honoured that Martin Zimmer will be the feature artist for the 23rd Annual Conservation Dinner,” said Bob Radtke, chairman of the Conservation Dinner Committee. “His fine watercolours are found in collections around the world and we are privileged that he is sharing his talent at our dinner and auction.”

The feature art is usually one of the most coveted pieces at the charitable event’s live auction. The charity gala dinner and auction has featured many talented featured artists over a history spanning more than two decades.

Martin Zimmer is an accomplished water-colour painter and also a nature and fitness enthusiast who said he is “surprised and pleased” to be honoured as this year’s feature artist.

He grew up in the Black Forest region of Germany (not far from Basel, Switzerland and Freiburg, Germany) where his parents ran a café. He says the beauty found in the Black Forest and the beauty found in Pinery Provincial Park in Grand Bend or the South Huron Trail in Exeter may be different but they have their own beauty and provide inspiration to an artist.

Zimmer was born to be a painter. As a kindergarten student he surprised his teacher by having already completed a painting complete with houses, moon, and stars and a bold name, ‘The Night.’

He came to Canada in 1957 at the age of 24 as a pastry chef and he used his creative talents in that profession decorating cakes before becoming a history and geography teacher at Sir Adam Beck Collegiate High School and Saunders Secondary School. Even during his years baking or educating he never strayed far from his love of painting. “I’ve always painted,” he said.

As a young man he painted with water colours because it was less expensive than oil paints. He switched to oil paints for a while but he eventually switched back in 1978. He loves painting water colours but he says the medium is unforgiving.

“To switch from oil to water colours is a 180 degree turn,” said Zimmer, in an interview at the studio in his Byron home. “With oils you start with the darker colours and with water colours you start with the light colours and then move towards the stronger colours,” he said. “Water colour compared to oil is unforgiving – once you make a major mistake it’s game over – you might as well start again.” Since switching back to water-colour painting he has learned to avoid the mistakes and also to develop his own technique.

The themes of his paintings range from Lake Huron scenes to works of art that capture his adopted home in London.

The London artist is never too far from nature. Even his backyard is an oasis of nature in the middle of a city.

This year’s artist is a good fit with a conservation event. Not only is nature one of the favourite themes for this painter but he and his wife have two children working in the environmental field. Martin and his wife Anneliese have three children: Christine, Martin, and Susan.

Martin looks younger than his 78 years and maintains a level of activity that most people half his age would find it hard to keep up. When the writer of this article caught up with Martin he had just completed 60 lengths swimming in a pool that morning. “I hike, I cross-country ski, I downhill ski, I swim … I roller-blade,” he said, during an interview at his London home.  He also works out at an athletic club and – oh, yes – he also paints.

After painting for a hobby for many years Zimmer said he had to decide whether to put his time into studying music or to dedicate himself seriously to the visual arts. He decided art was his true passion and true talent. He began exhibiting with a group of London artists, called the London Art Associates, and learning from them. “When I retired from teaching in 1995 I dedicated myself to painting full-time,” he said.

Zimmer has painted many pieces over the years but has 20 that have been reproduced as limited-edition prints.

The charitable Conservation Dinner is a partnership of the Exeter Lions Club, Ausable Bayfield Conservation Foundation, and community volunteers, donors, and patrons. The dinner and auction will be held on Thursday, April 19, 2012 at the South Huron Recreation Centre in Exeter. To purchase tickets and support this local conservation effort, phone 519-235-2610 or 1-888-286-2610 or visit www.conservationdinner.com. Tickets are $60 each and buyers receive a $25 charitable gift receipt for income tax purposes. Donations of art, memorabilia and other items are also welcome. Proceeds raised support increasing environmental and health benefits for the Ausable Bayfield community.

The announcement of the feature artist follows on the heels of a recent announcement that Exeter native Doug Brooks, CEO of Certified General Accountants of Ontario, will return to his home watershed for the event as special guest host that night.

History of the Conservation Dinner

The Conservation Dinner in Ausable Bayfield watersheds began in 1990 as a partnership with the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters. The Exeter Lions Club stepped up to the plate for the second year of the successful charitable fundraiser and the club now organizes the event in partnership with the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Foundation, the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority, community volunteers, donors, and patrons. This annual event has been going strong for more than 22 years and continues to fund important conservation projects throughout the Ausable Bayfield community, having raised more than $600,000 to date.

Donations support such local conservation projects as:

  • Maintaining accessible trails
  • Outdoor conservation education
  • Commemorative Woods
  • Stocking of fish for family-friendly fishing derby

Last year’s dinner set a fundraising record for the gala auction event, raising net proceeds of more than $53,000 for local conservation efforts. Tickets usually sell out for one of the most important charitable events of the season.

WinterFest returns to South Huron in 2012

WinterFest returns to South Huron for second year

Family Day event grew last year thanks to community teamwork

A committee of community organizations has announced that last year’s inaugural Family Day WinterFest South Huron was so successful the Exeter and area community is doing it again in 2012.

Volunteer George Finch says more than a dozen community organizations joined together last year for a successful event for families and individuals that included winter fireworks, free skating, a Lions Club breakfast, snowshoeing, hiking, tobogganing, and much more.

“Last year showed how community groups and volunteers were able to pull together to create a great community celebration that made winter shorter and more entertaining,” said Finch. “Community groups are joining together in 2012 so this great seasonal celebration can continue.”

The list of community groups taking part in WinterFest is growing every week, according to Finch. He said any community organizations or individuals who would like to volunteer can contact him at gfinch@cabletv.on.ca or 519-235-2099. The organizing committee has held two organizational meetings so far and the next one takes place at Morrison Dam Conservation Area at 71108 Morrison Line on Tuesday, January 24 at 7 p.m.

The Exeter Lions Club started the snowball rolling in 2010 with Family Day with the Exeter Lions Club and other community organizations and service clubs joined with them in 2011 to build the event into a well-attended celebration of family, community, and the great outdoors.

“The Family Day breakfast was a great event and the community effort to create Family Day WinterFest South Huron has just made the whole day better,” said Paul Scott, President of the Exeter Lions Club.

The Exeter Lions Club will be hosting their popular breakfast again this year to kick off the day, said Doug Upshall, Lions Breakfast Committee Chair. The breakfast takes place at South Huron Recreation Centre from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. and is $6 for adults, $4 for children.

Most events take place at MacNaughton Park along the South Huron Trail in Exeter and at South Huron Recreation Centre.

“Last year’s event was a great celebration and we are looking forward to another great year in 2012,” said Jim O’Toole, Chairman of the Friends of the South Huron Trail. “Mark your calendars for the holiday on Monday, February 20.”

Following breakfast there is ‘In Motion’ free family skating at South Huron Recreation Centre from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. thanks to the Exeter Lions Club and Municipality of South Huron.

“It’s really exciting to see people getting out of the house to get active and celebrate our great Canadian outdoors for an old-fashioned community celebration,” said Jo-Anne Fields, Community Services Manager with the Municipality of South Huron.

Family Day WinterFest South Huron continues with events throughout the afternoon and evening.

Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA), thanks to the sponsorship by Hansen’s Your Independent Grocer, will offer free family snowshoeing at the South Huron Recreation Centre in Exeter with free rental from 12 a.m. to 3 p.m. This is a rare opportunity, thanks to the sponsor, for people to try out snowshoes. A limited number of both traditional and aluminum snowshoes will be available at no cost. ABCA normally rents out their snowshoes to individuals and groups for a small fee.  ABCA staff will also be there to help you put them on and give advice for using them. Participants are encouraged to dress for the weather and wear comfortable low-heeled boots and if you have some, bring your own snowshoes.

Also leaving from the South Huron Recreation Centre, the Friends of the South Huron Trail will host an afternoon guided snowshoe walk for adults and supervised children from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. A limited number of snowshoes will be available for use at no cost, thanks to Hansen’s Your Independent Grocer.

There are numerous business contributors to the community event as well as community organizations, according to Finch.

South Huron Optimist Club will also be taking part, offering chili and hot dogs for sale with proceeds to community programming.

“Community spirit is alive and well in South Huron and area and Family Day WinterFest is an example of that spirit in action,” said Rose Glavin, President of the South Huron Optimist Club. “The South Huron Optimist Club is excited to be part of an event that exemplifies our commitment to children, youth, and families.”

Presto Movies will be hosting a movie from 3 p.m. – 5 p.m. at the South Huron Recreation Centre auditorium. Portable privies will be provided at MacNaughton Park courtesy of Grand Bend Sanitation.

The South Huron Fire Department – Exeter Station, with support from Trivitt Memorial Anglican Church, will hold a small fireworks display at MacNaughton Park over Exeter Dam (weather permitting, after sunset, around 6:30 p.m.).  The display will be about 15 minutes in length.

Information on Family Day WinterFest South Huron will be available shortly at a new website designed by SOHO Creative at familydaywinterfest.ca and posters will be available shortly and are being produced courtesy of ExeterPrintShop.com

Ontario Helping Bayfield Protect Local Water

McGuinty Government Invests In Water Innovation, Creates Jobs

NEWS

December 20, 2011

Ontario is helping Bayfield and 28 other communities create smarter solutions to protect water - one of our most valuable resources – and to provide safe, reliable clean drinking water to Ontarians.

Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA) is developing an innovative rural stormwater management model thanks to a grant of $700,000 through the Showcasing Water Innovation program. The model will also be field tested in five high priority watersheds along the southeast shore of Lake Huron. This program supports projects with innovative and cost-effective ways to improve drinking water, wastewater and stormwater systems.

Ontario has the highest standards for clean water in North America and has gone on to develop water technologies that are used around the world. Partnering with business on water innovation projects is a key component of the McGuinty government’s plan to become the continent’s water innovation leader by 2015 and create new clean jobs for Ontario families.

QUOTES

“We are seizing the opportunity to become a leader in water technologies. By tapping into our made-in-Ontario expertise, the McGuinty government is protecting our water resources, creating green industry jobs and providing water technology to the world.”

- Jim Bradley, Minister of the Environment

“This investment will help to provide Ontarians in the Lake Huron area with safe, clean and reliable drinking water.”

- Chris Bentley, MPP London West

“Today, the Province of Ontario has shown its commitment to a new and truly rural initiative to better understand how stormwater systems work in rural Ontario … This leading-edge work has not previously taken place and it will now fill a gap in understanding the nearshore water quality of Lake Huron. This better information will make it possible to implement improved strategic actions that protect water quality.”

 - Jim Ginn, Chairman of the ABCA Board of Directors

 QUICK FACTS

§        Ontario’s clean water industry employs 22,000 and generates $1.8 billion in sales.
